USELESS INFO TUESDAY

~  In the world of Japanese sports, the Curse of Colonel Sanders means years of losing baseball.  It started with a losing streak of the Hanshin Tigers of Osaka, that began in 1985 after fans swiped a statue of Colonel Sanders from a local Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet and tossed it into a nearby river while celebrating the team's national championship victory.


~  There are 121 holes on a standard Chinese checkerboard.  There are 61 in the hexagon in the center of the board and 10 in each of the triangular points of the board's six-pointed star.


~  Rob Roy is a name shared by a cocktail drink, a novel, an operetta, and a movie.  They are all named for Rob Roy McGregor, an 18th century Scottish Robin Hood-like character.  The drink generally consists of scotch, vermouth, bitters and a cherry.


~  Before designing Chatty Cathy and Barbie dolls for Mattel Toys, engineer Jack Ryan designed missiles for the U.S. military.  Working for the Raytheon Company, Ryan helped create the Sparrow and Hawk missile system.


~  Artist Georgia O'Keeffe once snapped "I hate flowers - I paint them because they're cheaper than models and they don't move."  She is known for her large, sensuous paintings of flowers.
