UNDER THE WEATHER

Well, I guess I survived my virus.  I missed Thursday and Friday of last week with a terrible sinus infection.  I finally got what has been going around.

When I got up this morning and left for work, I realized that I had not left my house since last Thursday!

It is good to be back in the land of the living.

(Jimmy, I am sorry I kissed you last Saturday and now you are sick.)

USELESS INFO FAT TUESDAY

Happy Mardi Gras!

~  The name Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, a day of feasting before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. This day is also known as Shrove Tuesday.

The first known Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans took place in 1837, though prior to that it was celebrated in Mobile, Alabama in 1703.

~  Floats became part of the New Orleans celebration in 1837.

~  The official colors of Mardi Gras have meanings. Purple is for justice, gold is for power and green is for faith. These were chosen by the Grand Duke of Russia in 1857.

~  Mardi Gras became a legal holiday in Louisiana in 1875.

~  Krewes, which are parade groups, started as private social clubs. The oldest of these is Comus which was founded in 1857.

~  The tradition of handing out items to the audience dates back to Renaissance Europe. In New Orleans, the first person to do that was a Krewe member dressed as Santa Claus in the 1880s.

LAISSEZ LES BONS TEMPS ROULER

What a wonderful time we had Saturday night in the first ever Decatur Mardi Gras parade!  The rain held off, and there were big crowds of spectators!  The float of the Crewe of Chaos was the place to be!  Khef is getting the float ready with the dry ice (above).

We were all so proud of the end product of our float.  Blood, sweat, tears and beer went into the decorating of the trailer.  It looked so good.  The crowd loved the color coded cans tied to the back (Grapico, Countrytime Lemonade, and Mountain Dew!)

Let's see who all is ready to get their parade on!  There's Btut in the trailer and Wino Bill waving behind her...also Scapecoat (not sure that nickname is going to stay), P Lolly, and L BigDawes waiting to go!

Here's Btut and TCW mid-parade.  We had so much fun throwing out beads, cups, toys, coins and balls!

After pulling the float back to Mom's garage we all sat around, had a few beers, and patted ourselves on the back. (J, R RightWright, AndyRandy and TCW)

This would not have been possible without Dr. Sweephay and A Andyrandy!  Thanks for showing us how much fun Mardi Gras can be!

K RightWright and Scapecoat with the winning float!

Thanks again everyone.  It really was a blast!

SANNIBAL LECTER...

...That is Sally's new nick name for when she is eating baby squirrels and field mice that she catches.  As I mention in previous blogs (see "Murder on Pennylane" and the one about Washaway laughing at inappropriate times) Sally catches and then proceeds to almost completely eat various prey.  It is so gross!  One time, Rachel and I were in the Smoking Lounge and she had left a squirrel head under my chair.  She always catches prey and then brings them to the Smoking Lounge to devour.  And I mean devour...bones and all!  You can hear them CRUNCH!

Therefore TCW and I thought up a nick name for when she is such a cannibal.  And what more appropriate name than a take off from one of your favorite movies Silence of the Lambs.

Her new nickname can be added to the already pretty extensive list of Sally nicknames:  Salad, Creamy Parmesan, Evil Zlid, Salibu, Wombat, Wombatacus, TinkTink, Sally May Jefferson Jackson Johnson Washington....

(I think the pic above represents her in her killing personality!)

~  Sherlock Holmes pursued the hobby of beekeeping after he retired from crime solving.
~  The only currency found in Abraham Lincoln's wallet after he was assassinated was a Confederate five dollar bill.

~  Hot tempered tennis star Goran Ivanisevic was forced to withdraw from the Samsung Open in Brighton, England in 2000 because he ran out of rackets during a match.  The hard-serving Croat had smashed 3 rackets in three separate outbursts and didn't have another one with him.

~  A century old pair of Levi's jeans discovered in a long-abandoned Colorado coal mine was sold for $25,000 in 1997.

~  The spice turmeric gives American-style mustard its yellow color.

LOOKING GOOD!

It's beginning to look a lot like Mardi Gras!  Thanks Wino Bill for the great banner.
